Essentially Childs Play

Essentially Childs Play was founded by Troy and Katie Kelly in April 2007. Its purpose was to provide Canowindra and its visitors with a unique range of quality wooden toys, puzzles, games, musical instruments and all manner of imagination building toys. We felt there was a need to provide toys where the child was an active player as opposed to a passive one, where they created the game as opposed to merely watching the specific action of a toy. From our humble beginnings where we stocked our shop using only 4 suppliers, we now actively use over 20 different suppliers to ensure a quality and comprehensive range. We are also very active in listening to our market and this has seen us steer the business in new directions. It has become very apparent that, where possible, our customers prefer an ethically based product. This has seen us take on and expand suppliers who use fair traded, ethically grown timbers, use cottage industry fair paid labour, recycle in their processes, provide employment opportunities and training for the disadvantaged and so on. Our participation in the support of these types of products has helped our suppliers head further down these paths themselves, meaning a brighter bigger picture is being painted for our children.

Essentially Child's PlayAll of these things make us feel good and sleep better at night as parents but what about the kids? To them the important things are “ is this toy bright and fun? Will it be a favourite that I will want to play with all day and have by my bed at night? Will I go nuts if we forget it when we go on holiday?”  If the toy came from Essentially Childs Play the answer to all these is yes. It’s great to avoid plastic, battery operated, licensed toys like we do and to support the type of supplier that we have, but at the end of the day these messages mean nothing if the kids don’t like it. What they want is number one for them and number one for us. The kids that come out of Essentially Childs Play won’t just make music for you with instruments; they’ll make music for you with laughter.
